preppy without the pompous (part 2)

my love affair with oxford & gingham continues with l.l.bean signature. just looking at these clothes makes me want to go to a clam bake - which i've never been to - though i imagine if i did go, i'd wear these clothes. and take that male model as my date, naturally.

preppy without the pompous (part 1)

i confess i have a soft spot for the blonde bad boys in boat shoes & pink polos in classic '80s films (can't buy me love or sixteen candles anyone? buuuueller?). there's a romanticism to american sportswear, and while plaid shirts, knit caps and dirty denim may be the twentysomething male uniform du jour, i already see a quiet return to classic (day i say preppy?) styling - for men & women.

l.l.bean & lands' end recently launched contemporary collections with a focus on attracting younger buyers nostalgic for their parents' catalogues & summers in maine. but who says you have to be off to nantucket for an excuse to dress preppy? gingham & oxford never go out of style. (holla andy bernard!)

today's post features lands' end canvas. check back later this week for l.l.bean signature. and i promise - no pink polos or bow ties (despite them making my heart flutter...)

music monday #3

despite the above photos, there are no aerosmith songs in this post. but aren't you just a bit jealous of steven tyler's iconic scarf/mic look? imagine if next time you rolled up to the mic at karaoke, you brought your own scarf. instant applause, right? you could sound like cameron diaz in my best friend's wedding and all the audience would notice is the scarf. they wouldn't be able to hear you over your coolness. and that, my friends, is a gift. from me to you. for the karaoke bar. oh and despite the fact i haven't sung karaoke for a year and a half since a location shoot wrap party for a series i worked on - in a bar/bowling alley in small town nova scotia no less - my song is let's hear it for the boy (alternate: ain't no mountain high enough). but i might sing a little cryin' next time for the full effect. just please, everybody, no i don't want to miss a thing...

this week's top 10 list...
empty house // animal
paper route // miike snow

the new love song // home (RAC mix)
joshua james // edward sharpe & the magnetic zeros

it's about time // connjur
barcelona // school of seven bells

october // take everything
broken bells // greg laswell

sing my lonesome // have a little faith in me
matt wertz // john hiatt

oscar fashion smashion

this year's oscars were pretty uneventful aside from the documentary short co-producer who pulled a kanye, the so you think you can dance music/dance number and a handful of heartfelt speeches and deserving wins (jeff good in crazy heart).

but let's be honest, the grooming and the gowns are half the reason we watch. so here are my picks. (sorry, no pans ... i'm not a hater ... i'll leave that to the twitterhaterati)

my best dressed...

cameron diaz in oscar de la renta & meryl streep in chris march

*cameron's always on my list. plus i love team zoe. i kind of want to wear this to my eventual wedding.
*is meryl a closet project runway fan? i love that she's been supporting the PR alum all awards season.

carey mulligan in prada & sandra bullock in marchesa

*carey's dress was age appropriate & the goth detailing full of personality. isn't her hair totally mia farrow in psycho?
*sandra's onto something - dress like an oscar, get an oscar?

vera farmiga in marchesa & jlo in armani prive

*va-va-volume. do you think when they designed the seats at the kodak theatre they took oscar dresses into consideration? 'cuz that could be 3.5 miserable hours...

kate bosworth & jessica simpson

*my favourite after party look belongs to kate bosworth & jessica looks so classy. suck it john mayer ;-)

victoria beckham & cameron diaz #2 - both in victoria beckham

*victoria beckham as fashion designer - who knew she could do more than overpriced denim? two bananas looks.

olivia wilde & kristen stewart in monique lhuillier

*olivia is after party perfection & i can't believe i like k-stew. so twihard of me...

rachel mcadams in elie saab & gabourey sidibe in marchesa

*i adore rachel's dreamy watercolour dress, but i'd prefer it on a magazine cover than on a red carpet. just saying... (ps. twitpic)
*gabourey is the s**t. she's so full of joy & sass. this dress is so flattering on her.

helen mirren in badgley mischka & miley cyrus in jenny packham

*helen has a drunken tattoo on her hand, which makes her amazing. also, i saw her in the west hollywood target a couple months ago buying an ironing board and wearing leisurewear and she still looked amazing.
*miley looks adorable & her hair/make-up are perfection. i love all the sequins this season. note to self: get out bedazzler. go to town.

demi moore in atelier versace & katy perry in zuhair marad

*i wasn't a huge fan on demi's dress on the red carpet, but it moved beautifully on stage. so romantic!
*katy looks like a little minx in this number. i really love it for some weird, twisted reason.

maggie gyllenhaal in dries van noten & sarah jessica parker in chanel

*i was on the fence about these looks, but i like risk takers, so props ladies.

ok, just one more...

zoe saldana in givenchy

*speaking of risk takers, you go girl. so beautiful from the back, but i must say it reminds me of the martha stewart crafts pom-poms and pulls focus from her gorgeous face. c'mon - i'm so right about the poms...

and now for the gents...

tom ford in tom ford & zac efron in calvin klein
*shh... don't speak, just look.

ryan reynolds in tom ford & robert downey jr

ps. my favourite joke of the night...
steve martin: "gabourey and i have something in common: in our first movies we were both born a poor black child."
